ORGANIZING UPDATES FOR JUNE 2008

First Student

May 30, 2008
First Student school buss drivers and mechanics were united in a 38-5 vote to join Teamsters Local Union No. 776. “These hard working drivers and mechanics are looking to secure some benefits and make this a job they can afford to stay in.” said President Dan Virtue, Teamsters Local 776. “We’re honored they turned to us and we will do our best to represent them to the fullest”, added President Virtue.

UPS Freight - Mechanicsburg

The Mechanicsburg terminal is the largest in the UPS Freight system. Teamster Local 776 has a team of organizers working through the card check process. We have a very strong and motivated inside committee of 30 UPS Freight employees. They have done everything asked of them thus far. This campaign will take more time and work. It will not be easy. However, we strongly believe we have the right plan being executed by the right team.

ORGANIZING UPDATES FOR MAY 2008

Adams County

On April 30th the Adams County Court Appointed Non-professionals voted 22-21 to join Teamsters Local Union No. 776. This is very satisfying victory, we lost this election by a few votes last year. Our Committee stayed in touch and when the year was up they called and said they were ready to go again. The County put up heavy resistance but the employees stayed the course and came out with a win.

York Township

On May 7th the York Township Employees voted 2-1 for representation by Teamsters Local No. 776. These twenty employees make up the Public Works Department of the Township. They are anxious to secure their future with a Teamster Contract.

UPS Freight-York

May 8th 70% of the 56 employees at the UPS Freight Terminal in York have signed cards to join Teamsters Local Union No. 776 and be included with the other 10,700 UPS Freight Employees who joined the Teamsters Union under the card check agreement. Many of these employees were Teamsters on withdrawal and are quite glad to be back as an active member.

First Student

Our NLRB Election has been scheduled. It will take place on May 30, 2008 from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, and again from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM in the shop area. This group is committed to doing what ever it takes to get a Teamster contract.

  ORGANIZING UPDATES FOR APRIL 2008

ADAMS COUNTY

On April 30th we will have another election for the Adams County Court Appointed non-professionals Unit. Last year we came up a few votes short. However, we look for a victory this time! There are 44 eligible voters in this unit with per diem employees making up well over 30%.

YORK TOWNSHIP

On May 7, 2008 the 20 employees of York township will vote on being represented by Local 776. This blue collar unit is motivated and 95% of the unit signed authorization cards. They are eager to secure their future with a Teamster Contract.

FIRST STUDENT

April 17, 2008 between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. the employees of First Student Transportation are invited to the Teamsters Local 776 Union Hall for lunch and a final meeting before the Local files the petition for an election. More than 75% of the 60 drivers have signed cards. Our committee continues to work diligently on this election.

UPS FREIGHT-YORK

UPS Freight in York has been designated a point-of-interest and cards have been distributed to the York employees. The cards have been coming in, however, we still have a lot hard work ahead of us before we can exercise the card check agreement.

ORGANIZING UPDATES FOR FEBRUARY 2008

West York Borough Police Department

On February 1, 2008 the PLRB certified Teamsters Local 776 as the bargaining agent for the 11 officers and the Chief at the Borough's Police Department. After the certification, Borough Council agreed to extend the current contract for 1 year with a 4% increase. The extension will allow Council and the Union time to negotiate a new contract.

First Student

We have an active campaign with 60 drivers at the First Student Yard in Harrisburg. We had our first meeting in early February with a handful of drivers. As time goes on our committee continues to grow.

Public Sector

We are currently continuing to work on three (3) public sector companies. All are in various stages of the process.

When workers organize with the Teamsters Union, they gain the power to make themselves heard.

Forming a union at your workplace gives you and your co-workers the power to stand up for your families, your futures and yourselves. Through a legal, binding contract it gives you a strong, collective voice with which to demand decent working conditions, with fair pay and benefits.

That's what the Teamsters are all about: decent working conditions, better pay, strong benefits and dignity and respect on the job.

The Teamsters can help you explain the benefits of union membership to your fellow employees, and assist in planning an organizing drive.

Once you and your co-workers become Teamsters, working with your local union representatives, contract language and proposals for negotiations are developed. Local Union officers and business agents fight with you to win a fair, good-paying Teamster contract with job protection that you deserve.

Teamsters contracts are the best in the labor movement. We have earned our reputation for bargaining hard and demanding the best protections and wages. For a century Teamsters solidarity has kept corporate America from holding the cards and calling all the shots. When you join the Teamsters you put that history to work for you.

We are the Teamsters. We are 1.4 million strong and our membership is growing. Join us. WE WIN WHEN WE STAND AS ONE.
